Hall of Famer Fingers to serve as celebrity host of golf tournament

Rollie Fingers helped create the role of the modern closer. Now he will try his hand at “starting” as the former Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award winner helps open the traditional post-Labor Day Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open Pro-Am in Cooperstown.

Fingers, a 1992 Hall of Fame inductee and owner of 341 career saves, has been named the celebrity host for the 31st annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open and Pro-Am Golf Tournament at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown. Fingers will participate in the Sept. 3 Pro-Am, while nearly 100 top pros from around the country are expected to compete in the Seniors Open, which runs Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 4 to 6.

On Labor Day – Monday, Sept. 2 – Fingers will be featured in a Voices of the Game event at 11 a.m. in the museum’s Grandstand Theater. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children younger than 12. Tickets can be reserved by participants in the Hall of Fame’s Membership Program starting Monday, Aug. 5 by calling 547-0397 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Any remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, Aug. 26.

As the Pro-Am master of ceremonies, Fingers – a seven-time All-Star who won the 1981 American League Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player Award with the Milwaukee Brewers – will be featured throughout the Tuesday, Sept. 3 Pro-Am and as the speaker at the fundraiser dinner. The golf event will begin with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. For more information on the Pro-Am or to register to play, visit www.pathfindervillage.org .

Proceeds from this event benefit Pathfinder Village located in nearby Edmeston, a residential community dedicated to children and adults with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Annually, the Seniors Open raises more than $50,000 for scholarships for Pathfinder Village and directly helps the village’s 90-plus residents. More than $2 million has been raised for Pathfinder Village through the years.
