For a volunteer fire department, preparing for the arrival of a sitting president is no small matter.

“It's exciting,” said Stretch Redding, secretary of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department, when asked about President Barack Obama's visit.

Redding said that the fire company has stationed two fire trucks and an ambulance at the site where the president's helicopter will land. Additionally, there will be two fire company EMS personnel stationed at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, where the president will be giving his speech. There will also be a second ambulance on standby. Redding said that the vehicles at the landing site will stay in position until the president leaves.

“We found out when we read the paper,” said Redding, when asked when the company learned that the president would be coming.

Redding said that neighboring departments are on standby to take Cooperstown's ambulance calls while the department is preoccupied with the president's visit.
