We honored our residents who are veterans on Veterans Day, including Alberta Bowes, Bill Bowes, Janet Gorman, Art Laidlaw, Wally Pickhardt, Ralph Veenema and Grace Welsh. It is wonderful to have so many residents who served our country. Some were nurses, some physicians, a pharmacy technician, on the sea, on land, and in the air. We thank them all for their service.
We all have a strong sense of community and make a meaningful contribution as opportunities arise. Over the past few weeks, residents worked with personal care staff Dee Bouck, Mary Butler and Jan Scrafford to create Thanksgiving favors for in-patients at Bassett Medical Center. We also adopted a Christmas family again this year and are already raising funds to support the project. It gives us all a sense of purpose and fulfillment to be able to help others in need.
On Wednesday, Nov. 14, the home held a welcome party to recognize new residents Gene Dietz, Janet Gorman and Carrie Jane Watkins. Delicious hors d’oevres were served with a wonderful vodka punch. We enjoyed meeting the families and friends of the new residents. Gene lived in Schoharie for many years and his daughter, Dawne taught at Cooperstown school. We were glad to welcome Gene’s friends to the home and we’re looking forward to hearing him play the tin whistle. Janet has lived in many different countries, but settled in Cooperstown several years ago. Janet has two daughters, Teresa and Nancy, and a son, Raymond, who all attended the party with their families. Janet has many talents, including knitting beautiful baby afghans that she donates to Bassett Medical Center. Carrie Jane’s friends and children, Myra and John, attended the party with their families. Carrie Jane enjoys nature and social events at the home. We’re so happy to welcome them all to The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home.
Grace Welsh also joined the Home recently and will be having her welcome party in the near future. Grace has a wonderful sense of humor and enjoys reading. Janet, Gene, Carrie Jane and Grace have already become part of our family and it’s wonderful to have them here.
We celebrated November birthdays for Frank Rollins, who turned 95, Pat DeBaun, Vivian Allison, Laurie and Fred Blatt and Joy Wochek. With all the celebrations, it’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is here and we’ll all gather again to enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. We have so much to be thankful for; friends, families, Ginger our cat, Dudley our canine companion, the birds and fish!
From our home to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
