MCS’S Winterfest will be held Saturday

There are two good reasons to venture to the annual Winterfest at Milford Central School this Saturday _ to get out and about, have some fun and to help support the efforts to raise money for earthquake victims in Haiti.

The event is being organized by the district’s Community in Action (CIA) club, a student-driven volunteer organization dedicated to helping the greater Milford community.

According to CIA president Jane O’Bryan, a percentage of the proceeds from this year’s Winterfest will be donated to the American Red Cross to aid earthquake victims in Haiti. The student organization is also hosting a school fundraiser called `Hats for Hati.’

The group is inviting students and faculty to wear a hat to school on Friday in exchange for a $1 donation to aid earthquake victims in Haiti.

The MCS Winterfest will include indoor and outdoor activities for those of all ages, according to organizers. The event will kick off with a pancake breakfast. The breakfast, which is hosted by the Milford Fire Department, will take place from 8-10 a.m. in the school cafeteria.

According to organizers, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy indoor activities.

There will be a Kids Kraft Table set up near the cafeteria from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a room for a number of craft activities available to visitors from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

GAMES AND TOURNAMENTS:

Organizers have planned plenty of games and tournaments for participants to get involved in. A badminton tournament will be held in the gymnasium from 10 to 11:30 a.m. A volleyball tournament will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Individuals can sign up at the welcome desk to be placed on a team. A three-point and foul shooting contest will be held the gymnasium from noon to 1 p.m.

Teams will be formed for a scavenger hunt, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

According to organizers, the television show Whose Line is It Anyway will look like an amateur hour next to the improv games the music association has planned from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. People will also be able to test their knowledge of trivia in a game of jeopardy, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Tumble time of twisting and acrobatics will take place in the small gym from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with an opportunity to watch a pro juggler to follow.

ACTIVITIES THAT INVOLVE FOOD:

Organizers have several activities planned that involve food. With some chemical reactions and a little physical exercise, visitors will be able to enjoy ice cream while learning about science. This event will take place in front of the school from 2 to 3 p.m.

Top Chefs from around the area have dusted off their secret chili recopies in order to compete in the annual chili cook-off. For $1 people can get a cup and sample the different chilies. It will be up to the tasters to determine the winner. This event will be held in the cafeteria from 11 a.m. to noon.

Visitors will also get a chance to sample a number of chocolate delights for $1. This will be held in the cafeteria from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

CONCERT:

Elementary performers will show off their singing, tumbling, kazooing, hula hooping and jump roping skills during the Kool Kids Concert from 10 to 11:15 a.m.

OUTSIDE ACTIVITY:

Those who like the great outdoors will be able to snowtube outside near the Sound Garden, weather permitting. Other activities planned throughout the day include a safety patrol raffle, a Chinese auction to raise funds for the Goodyear Lake Polar Bear Jump, a rotary chicken barbeque, a Blue Ribbon Clogger’s performance from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. and a rummage sale in the technology room from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will also be food sales and several vendors at the event.
