July 4th festivities, parade planned in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — The 95th annual 4th of July Parade and Celebration for the town of Springfield will take place at 11 a.m. in Springfield Center, at the Community Center.

And once again, it is expected to draw almost 6,000 people to the town for the festivities, according to organizers.

The key to the parade’s continued success may the old-fashioned atmosphere it provides, said organizers.

``Since its inception the parade has grown, as the town has, and increased interest draws more folks to the parade each year. Why is this such a draw? It’s simple, I think that the parade is still small town, homey, quaint, but more importantly, it reminds us of a much simpler time, when life wasn’t so busy and we all were more relaxed,’’ said Maureen Culbert, of East Springfield.

``For this one day, we can stop and appreciate that time. Folks visit with old friends they don’t see often, drop down their blankets with family, and for that short time, are taken back to a piece of history, when people got together and worked together for a common goal: to celebrate community.’’

The theme for the parade entries and floats this year is: Red, white, blue and GREEN.

And this year for the first time there will be a photo contest.

The theme ‘`red, white, blue and GREEN,’’ can be interpreted for the entry, or a patriotic theme is also acceptable.

Black and white or color photos sized 8 x10 should be prepared and submitted no later than June 20.

The photo contest will be displayed indoors at the Community Center, where there are available spots for other indoor displays.

A Brooks BBQ will be held at noon along with the performance of the Cooperstown Community Band.

Fritz Henry will also be performing and games, and activities are planned.
