CV-S girls have global goals

CHERRY VALLEY — Members of the Cherry Valley- Springfield Lady Patriots varsity soccer team want to make a difference concerning environmental issues and are doing so by working as a team.

Beginning on the first Friday of September, the girls came together to start participating in a program called Global Goals. They have organized community clean ups, handed out letters to opposing teams asking them to join in their mission, and have been informing others abut issues facing the environment.

Sophomore Mallory Garretson got the team involved in helping clean up the environment after receiving a letter from her sister Bethany. Bethany was named co-captain of the Paul Smith’s College women’s soccer team this season and she and her team have created an environmental organization called Global Goals and are trying to get others to come aboard in making a difference.

According to a letter sent to the CV-S team from the Adirondack team, the Paul Smith College women’s team came up with the idea of launching Global Goals after the team’s first full day of preseason practice.

``On our morning run, as the fog was still lifting off Lake St. Regis we couldn’t help but notice the trash along the roadside. Unable to run by it, we began to pick it up. Our coach was confused when we came back an hour later with armloads of empty beer cans and Big Mac wrappers,’’ the letter read.

Members of the team decided then and there that they could make a difference and it was that morning Global Goals was born.

Mallory said the 19-member CV-S team has been trying its best to keep the environment around them clean since accepting the offer to become the first sister school to join in the mission. She said she and a couple of girls from the team went around the school grounds picking up litter the weekend of the CV-S soccer tournament. Some of the garbage could have been there for years, said Mallory.

Freshman Maya Anichini was one of the teammates ho helped clean up before the tournament. ``Some of the stuff we picked up was really gross,’’ she said. Anichini said although cleaning up may not be the most pleasant task, it does make her feel good to do it.

``Everyone says they want to
