CROP walk is Sunday

The annual CROP walk, which raises money to meet the needs of the hungry both locally and throughout the world, will be held this Sunday at 1 p.m. in the village of Cooperstown. The walk is also intended to raise awareness of hunger issues.

Twenty five percent of donations remain in our own community, benefiting the Cooperstown Emergency Food Bank, organizers said.

The walk begins at St. Mary’s Church on Elm Street, and weaves through the village with rest points at other village churches. The CROP Walk is a project of the Cooperstown Ecumenical Council. CROP was founded in 1947 through Church World Service. CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.

In the last two decades CROP Walks in some 2000 communities across the United States and Canada have raised over $264 million. As an example of what funds raised through CROP can do: a donation of $72 can provide emergency food for a family of five for a month in other parts of the world.

For more information about the Walk, contact Betsy Jay, 547-5753.
