---- — A 29-year-old ex-convict from Milford has been charged with threatening to kill Otsego County Court Judge John Lambert, authorities said Wednesday.
Brandon J. Empie, a resident of the Amber Life Inn at 6175 State Highway 7, Colliersville, was charged with making a terroristic threat after he said he was going to burn down Lambert’s home and kill the judge, the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Lambert also serves as the county’s Family Court jurist, and Empie was involved in a matter before the Family Court, law enforcement officials said. Officials said Empie did not threaten the judge directly.
The investigation was carried out by the Sheriff’s Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
Empie was arraigned Tuesday before Milford Town Judge Carol Rumenapp and sent to county jail for lack of $10,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to town court next month.
According to the state Department of Correctional Services, Empie was paroled from state prison in December 2011. He was sent to state prison in 2010 after having been convicted of a felony burglary charge in Otsego County.
Court officers from the state Office of Court Administration helped in the probe, according to Senior Investigator Michel Ten Eyck of the Sheriff’s Department.
If Empie is convicted of making a terroristic threat, he could be sent to prison for up to seven years, officials said.
The case is being prosecuted by District Attorney John Muehl and Assistant District Attorney Marvin Parshall Jr.
