Local athlete has shot at state award

Cherry Valley-Springfield athlete Kyle Jaquay is among 20 state finalists for the New York Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

He was selected from 1,241 New York applicants and, as a finalist, is recognized as an athlete who “embody the Heisman spirit of hard work and dedication through their outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community/school leadership,” according to a media release. A total of 45,000 seniors applied nationwide.

One male and one female will be selected as a state winner and have a chance to become one of 12 national finalists who will travel to New York City and be featured during a televised ceremony on ESPN networks. National finalists will receive gold medals and $2,000 in awards for their respective high schools.

The program will then select one male and one female national winner. Each will receive a crystal trophy and a $500 gift certificate to Wendy’s, which also will donate $10,000 to their respective high schools.

The national winners will be recognized during an ESPN broadcast Dec. 8.
