---- — While most students were celebrating their first week of summer the week of June 24 to 28, the New Visions Pre-Engineering students were competing in a national competition halfway across the country.

Four of the students from the New Visions Pre-Engineering program at Northern Catskills Occupational Center in Grand Gorge competed in Quiz Bowl as representatives of New York at the SkillsUSA National Conference held in Kansas City this year.

SkillsUSA is an international organization that holds contests for students at technical schools in all fields, ranging from culinary to automotive repair to even first aid skills. Quiz Bowl tested the students’ general knowledge by having them take multiple choice exams and compete in head-to-head competition over two days on not only academic topics, but current events, as well.

As part of the conference, they met students from all over the country, including students from places such as the Virgin Islands and Hawaii. They also learned about different types of engineering, different college programs, and met with Army officials. Some of the highlights of the conference included: a SkillsUSA night at the Worlds of Fun Amusement Park; having a special SkillsUSA concert at Kansas City Live!; and listening to Mike Rowe from “Dirty Jobs” during the opening ceremony.
