CV-S appoints Ryan as new superintendent

Otego principal takes over Dec. 1

After a five month long search, the Cherry Valley Board of Education and Interim Superintendent Richard Rose appointed a new Superintendent, Timothy R. Ryan.

The Board voted unanimously on Oct. 30 in favor of Ryan.

Three candidates for the superintendent position met with administrators, teachers, students, parents and community members on Oct. 15. Of the three candidates, Rose said Ryan stood out.

“In this process someone always rises to the top, in this case Mr. Ryan did,” Rose said Monday.

“He has a wealth of experience as a teacher and a principal,” Rose continued.

Ryan served as a teacher for a total of 12 years. He taught high school earth science and non-regents biology and he also taught all content areas of sixth grade.

He has been a principal at the Otego Elementary School in the Unatego Central School district for the past six years.

Rose said Ryan has qualities that will make him a great superintendent. “He has an outgoing personality and he’s a very good listener,” Rose said.

Those attributes that may get him far, as many Cherry Valley-Springfield community members voiced concerns about the lack of communication from the superintendent in the past.

Ryan said he plans to be highly visible in the CV-S community and have several opportunities for parents and community members to meet with him to discuss any questions or ongoing issues regarding the school.

“I’d like to build upon the successes of Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School,” Ryan said. “I want to get their thoughts on issues we really need to address and use that to chart a course to move forward.”

Ryan believes that if everyone works together Cherry Valley-Springfield School will have a successful future, he said.

“I’m very excited to meet and get to know the entire Cherry Valley-Springfield community,” he said.

Rose said he has mixed feelings about leaving his role as the Interim Superintendent.

“The people of Cherry Valley have been very warm and welcoming, including the students,” he said.

Though he said he is excited to retire again after working in education for so many years, “I hope to be involved (with Cherry Valley) in some way in the future,” Rose continued.

Ryan will start as superintendent on Dec. 1st.
