Organizers: Edinger tourney a success

---- — Beautiful weather and friendly competitors contributed to the success of the fourth annual Lyn Edinger Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by The Cooperstown Rotary Foundation, on Aug. 18 at the Meadow Links Golf Course.

Marc Barraco, Eddie Bello, Bill Richards and Bob Barraco scored a 54 on the 58-par course to win the captain and crew format tournament.

Each player won $50 in gift certificates to a restaurant including Toscana Cucina Italiana, Portabello’s Restaurant, The Hawkeye, Danny’s Market and Doubleday Cafe. 

The second place team was Ed Gwilt, Steve Pugliese, Jeff Wilcox and John Ford with a 61.They each received a round of golf at Meadow Links Course and a Cooperstown Hawkeyes coffee mug.

Mitch Van Winkler, Mike Garbera, Mike Garbera III and Kevin Philips finished third.

The most honest foursome, for the team with the highest score, was won by Joe Senchyshyn, Matt Curtis, Frank Diplado and Keith Dickerson.    

The closest to the pin contest was won by Nik Maijala, at age 11 the youngest golfer in the tournament. His father, former Cooperstown Rotarian, Jake Maijala won the contest in 2012.

In the Putting Contest, Rich Daley took top honors, with Jake Maijala placing second.

The chairwoman of the CRF, Ellen Tillapaugh, commented that the donors who contributed prizes, underwrote the reception and sponsored course holes and the putting tournament were all fundamental to the success of the tournament.

In honor of Edinger, the CRF will be donating proceeds from the tournament to the Michael Mayne Scholarship at Edmeston Central School. Edinger organized the foundation’s initial contribution to this scholarship in 2009, and in recognition of his leadership, CRF will continue to support the scholarship in memory of Michael Mayne, a local soldier killed in Iraq.
