---- — Cooperstown Cheese wins ribbon
The Cooperstown Cheese Company of Milford brought home a white ribbon at the 2013 American Cheese Society’s annual cheese competition, “The Oscars of Cheese,” in Madison, Wis.
The Otsego County cheese maker took third place for its “Jersey Girl” in the category for American original cheeses made from any milk, a highly competitive category for one-of-a-kind cheeses. “Jersey Girl” is a creamy, buttery textured raw milk cheese produced from pastured Jersey cow’s milk obtained from Tim and Patti Everett’s Stone House Farm in Sharon Springs.
Co-owner Sharon Tomaselli said in a news release: “This has been a great year for our ‘Jersey Girl,’ first to share a spot with our Toma Celena on the dessert plate at the Presidential Inauguration in January, and now to receive this very important national recognition from the American Cheese Society.”
The American Cheese Society is an organization representing the Artisan Cheese business for all of North and Central America.
Tomaselli and Bob Sweitzer, founders of Cooperstown Cheese Company, produced their first batch of Cheese in Milford in 2007. Their cheeses are widely available around the New York metropolitan area, as well as being increasingly available in the San Francisco Bay area and Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Other New York winners included Meadowood Farms in Cazenovia, Catapano, Old Chatham Sheepherding, Coach Farms, Lactalis America, Macadam and Formaggio Italian Cheese.
