---- — The Fly Creek Cider Mill will reopen for its 157th season on Saturday — with some fresh ideas.

During the winter, the mill’s owners attended the North American Farmers’ Direct Marketing Association’s tour and conference in Portland, Ore., to learn better ways to marker their business, according to a media release from the Mill

More than 400 farm direct marketers attended the annual event from across North America. A tour feature for Bill Michaels, co-owner of the Fly Creek Cider Mill, was a stop at Bob’s Red Mill in Milwaukie, Ore.where the group toured the retail store and spoke with founder Bob Moore about the growth of his successful mill.

“I was inspired by my conversation with Bob about how he developed his Mill, similar to our own, into a food destination,” Michaels said in the press release. “He has built the brand into a successful business while keeping the theme true to its history.”

Three conference days proceeded with idea sharing among successful agri-tourism farm businesses that included a presentation by the famous Pike Place Fish Market team.

Michaels said the highlight for him was the first-place award for the Mill’s full-color brochure.

The ideas gained by the conference will be implemented this season, the release said, strengthening the Mill’s specialty foods and core products.

A new event this year is the Cider Run 5k Fun Run/3k Walk fundraiser to benefit the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties.

The race will start and end at the Mill on Saturday, April 27. Participants who register before April 1 will receive a commemorative T-shirt and pint glass filled with hard or sweet cider upon completion of the race, which will begin at 10 a.m. To register, visit www.unitedwaydo.org or call the United Way at 432-8006.
