Carnival declared a success by organizers

The weather cooperated for the Cooperstown Winter Carnival last weekend.

“(It’s) chilly, but it’s supposed to be during the winter,” said Caroline Geertgens of Cooperstown.

Her daughter, Elianna, 10, and her husband, Paul Geertgens, ran the Bob Smullens 5K race.

Elianna said the race was her favorite part of the weekend events.

“I don’t think I could run a 5K without my dad,” she said.

The male and female winners of the 5K Run were Brian Waters with a time of 17:36 and Emma Spinosa in 22:47. The 10K winners were Josh Edmonds in 32:54 and Andrea Loewendorf in 47:05.

For Caroline Geertgens, her favorite part was the “Cool Runnings” sled races on Sunday morning.

“The sledding was more of a family thing,” Caroline Geertgens said. “We all participated, my other children and her grandparents too.”

Teresa Leveille, co-chairwoman of the Cooperstown Winter Carnival committee, is also a big enthusiast of the sled races as well.

“The sled races are the best event in my opinion,” Leveille said. “It’s always a spectacular event and the kids love it.”

“I would travel from around the world to go to this event,” she continued.

According to the organizers of the event, 40 people participated in the sled races at Lake Front Park this year, a striking increase from last year when there were only 10 participants.

This year’s carnival was a success, Leveille said.

“I think it went very well,” added co-chairwoman Sarah Korsch. “A lot of people came out to enjoy the events.”

The winner of the “Elixir of the Gods” Drink Contest for both the Judge’s Choice and Audience Favorite awards was the Cooperstown Distillery.

The winner of the Nancy Kerrigan Chili Contest for the Best Individual was Jeff Lalune and for the Best Business was Council Rock.

The winner of the Tanya Harding Chicken Wing Contest for the Best Business was Cooley’s Tavern.
