New superintendent positive about Cherry Valley-Springfield

Three month into job, Ryan addressing challenges

Tim Ryan has served as the new superintendent for the Cherry Valley-Springfield School District for three months, and he has nothing but positive things to say about his new school.

“It’s been going very well,” said Ryan. “The whole Cherry Valley community has been very welcoming.”

This is Ryan’s first time serving in the superintendent role. Formerly, Ryan served as the building principal for the Otego Elementary School in the Unatego Central School district.

“It is a great role,” Ryan said. “I get to access education through many different channels.”

Ryan said the past three months have gone very well and he feels happy about his experience.

When he took over the role, he said he wanted to “listen and learn about what people wanted to change about CVSCS,” in order to properly address the challenges facing the district.

The major thing that people said needs fixing is the communication between the school and the community, he said. In the past three months, Ryan said he has taken several steps to fix the problems.

At 8 a.m. on March 14, Ryan is inviting parents and community members to have “coffee with the superintendent.”

Ryan also said he writes a column in the school newsletter to address any topical issues that are in the news such as the Common Core.

Ryan also started an automated calling system to notify parents about upcoming events and to announce school closings or delays.

There is also an application that is being created for smart phones or tablets that is specific to CV-S. The app will list important current events, school closings and also the school calendar. Ryan said this would simplify the process of parents getting information about the school.

“It’s much easier to click on an app then to navigate through the website,” he said.
