The Cooperstown Art Association will be putting on a production of “The Vagina Monologues” this weekend, as part of the event V-Day Cooperstown.
Performances will be March 27, 28 and 30 and take place in the association’s Ballroom Gallery. The Cooperstown Art Association is located on 22 Main St.
“The Vagina Monologues” is a play written by Eve Ensler. The first draft was based off Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women, and consists of a series of monologues in which women relate their personal feelings and experiences, many of which involve their bodies, sexuality and violence against women.
First performed in 1996, the play became a hit, and has been staged around the globe. It also spawned a movement, V-Day, in 1998, which aims to raise money to combat violence against women through performances of the monologues and performances and screenings of related works. The V-Day movement has raised more than $90 million for this cause.
The Cooperstown production, V-Day Cooperstown, is a part of this effort. All profits from the three performances will go to Opportunities for Otsego to help women who have been victims of domestic abuse.
The Cooperstown production will feature local and regional actors and is directed by Rebecca Burk-Sciallo. Tickets are $10 and available at the door. More information can be found by calling (315) 858-0210.
