CV-S trying student member of Board of Education

Carson also student council president

For the first time ever, the Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School Board of Education has an appointed student representative attending their monthly meetings.

Jessica Carson, a senior and the president of Student Council at CV-S, began attending BOE meetings in August. The position is a non-voting one, and is being tried by the BOE this school year. Board members have said they want to see how the project goes before making it a permanent position.

Carson said she likes attending the BOE meetings because she likes to “be aware of what’s happening” at CV-S.

The Interim Superintendent of CV-S Central School, Richard Rose said they decided to have a student representative to gain “perspective.”

“(The board) welcomes the young student’s perspective,” Rose said in an interview.

“I think it’s a wonderful thing,” he continued.

Rose said that it’s helpful to have Carson there because the board members aren’t in school all day. He also said that it’s a great way for students to learn about civic duties and what’s happening in the school.

Carson said she is passionate about getting involved in the community and encourages other students to be more cognizant of what is happening locally.

“I think it’s important for students to be involved in the community now because eventually they’re going to grow up,” she said. “It’s like a head start.”

Carson is taking three Advanced Placement courses this year as well as pre-calculus. She is applying to Herkimer County Community College to study to be a Physical Therapy Assistant. After she graduates she hopes to work and take classes online to become a Physical Therapist.

In addition to her rigorous coursework, Carson said she also enjoys painting and photography. She likes to take photos during long walks in the woods and develop the film in the black and white studio at the school.
