---- — The Clark Sports Center is getting an annual boost from people resolving to get fit to start the new year, according to group fitness coordinator Amy Porter.
“We are normally super busy from January to March,” Porter said. “New Year’s resolutions, it being cold outside and getting ready for spring break, people have a lot of reasons to be here.”
To make the most out of this annual surge of members, the sports center has recently added group fitness classes to its base membership fee, added new classes, and started up its “Commit to be Fit” program.
Starting Dec. 26, all group fitness classes were made free to all members of the gym. Previously, the classes cost extra.
The classes are offered every day on a first-come, first-serve basis. Some of the most popular classes include aqua fitness, fitness, Spinning and Zumba, Porter said.
New classes being offered this session include Zumba Gold and tai chi and the gym has added more classes to the schedule in anticipation of increased participation, Porter said. The classes and facilities offer something for people of all ages.
“We have people from kindergarten up to members in their 90s, so we run the gamut,” Porter said.
The gym also runs a program during the winter months called “Commit to Be Fit.” Members who pay $10 can compete for membership credits in the program. Participants earn points by completing challenges, participating in seminars or losing weight, assistant marketing director Emily Kishbaugh said.
Commit to Be Fit, which was first done last year, helps motivate members to be active and also creates a sense of community through competition, Kishbaugh said.
Dean Roberts, a member of the gym since 1986, says that the new changes will have a positive impact on the gym and its members.
“There’s been a lot of buzz about the free classes, because people can try out new things now and they don’t have to dig into their pockets to pay for it,” he said.
Roberts also said he participates in Commit to Be Fit and it is a good way to keep people motivated to stay fit into the new year.
“It helps get me off the couch sometimes,” he said.
