The Cooperstown/Otsego County Relay For Life Planning Committee will host its next Team Captains’ meeting from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at the Cooperstown Middle/High School on Linden Avenue.
According to organizers, the primary focus for this month’s meeting will be on new team captains — those who are captaining a team for the very first time. However, all returning team captains are encouraged to attend, as well as those interested in learning more about forming a team for the 2013 Relay For Life.
Topics will include the event’s new website, how to sign up a team/team members, how to enter donations, fundraising ideas, this year’s theme, what to expect at the event, among other things.
This year’s event, sponsored annually by the American Cancer Society, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, at Cooperstown Dreams Park. The 2013 theme is Celebrating the Road of Progress in honor of the 15th year the event has been held locally as well as the American Cancer Society’s 100th anniversary.
Relay For Life is an overnight celebration of hope and survivorship held annually in more than 6,000 communities across the United States and 20 foreign countries. Pre-formed teams camp out and team members take turns walking a track throughout the night in honor of those who have fought cancer and in memory of those who are no longer with us. Beginning Friday at 6 p.m., there is an opening ceremony, followed by a survivor dinner, Fight Back and Luminary ceremonies. Teams do most of their fundraising before the event, but they also hold fundraisers at their campsite during the event. Entertainment and activities take place throughout the night. A closing ceremony culminates the Relay early Saturday morning.
Organizers said this year’s fundraising goal is $115,000, which will to toward cancer research, patient services, education and advocacy. A portion of what is raised each year is put to use in Otsego County.
