The Fenimore Quilt Club and the Cooperstown Art Association recently presented the Cooperstown Quilt Show Viewer’s Choice. The CAA estimated that more than 1,000 people attended this year’s show and each person was asked to vote for his or her favorite.
The 22nd annual Quilt Show was a regional exhibit. Out of about 100 quilted pieces in the show, which included full-size quilts, wall hangings, baby quilts and pillows, the Viewer’s Choice was “Waiting for the Mail” by Mary Wilber Wirchansky of Schenevus. In this art quilt, the quilter’s grandfather is portrayed waiting for the mail with his dog in front of the house he built in eastern North Carolina. In the sky excerpts of letters are inscribed that he wrote to his daughter in the 1930s and early ‘40s. Stamps are also included from that era.
Kathy Allen of Cooperstown was the winner of the 2013 raffle quilt, made by members of the Fenimore Quilt Club depicting buildings of many shapes and sizes.
