---- — Patricia Jacob, a long-time employee of Bassett and an advanced practice clinician in the area of oncology at Bassett’s Regional Cancer Institute, is the 2012 recipient of the Henry Allen Moe Prize in Honor of Pearl F. Day award, according to a media release from Bassett.

The nursing award is given annually to a Bassett nurse who exemplifies concern for patients and their families and demonstrates enthusiasm and integrity in performance of the nursing role. Jacob, a certified oncology nurse practitioner, is dedicated to her patients and their families and encourages her patients to be active participants in their care and survivorship.

According to the release, Jacob’s peers say she laughs and cries with patients, conveys the sense that life and quality of life are precious commodities and does everything humanly possible to make sure they enjoy it.

Jacob has worked for Bassett for 24 years, beginning as a registered nurse in Critical Care and then working in the Department of Surgery as a family nurse practitioner. She has worked at Oneonta Regional Cancer Center since 2009.

“I am very touched and humbled by this recognition,” Jacob said in the release. “Throughout my career at Bassett, I have been blessed to work with an incredible group of nurses, all very dedicated to giving exceptional care to our patients. I can’t think of a finer group of individuals and am very proud to be counted in their number.”

“There is no greater honor than being recognized by your colleagues and peers for the work that you do,” Connie Jastremski, R.N., chief nursing officer, Bassett Healthcare Network, said in the release. “Patty is a true role model of what a nurse should do every day no matter what the role they are in.”

Jacob, who lives in Oneonta, obtained her degree as a family nurse practitioner from State University of New York at Binghamton.

The Henry Allen Moe Prize honors Pearl F. Day, a nurse at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Brooklyn during World War I. Day cared for Dr. Henry Allen Moe, former chair of the Bassett Board of Trustees, while he was a patient at the hospital after the war. Moe’s will designated that a $500 annual award be given to a Bassett nurse in honor of Pearl F. Day. The award has been given for 35 year.
