---- — Aidan Macaluso, president of the Cooperstown Leo Club, was recently honored by Lions District Governor Doug Russell at the Fall Convention held in Syracuse, according to a media release from the club.

Russell presented Macaluso with the “Heart of the Lion” award to recognize his spirit of service and initiative in leading the Leo Club in their project to raise $5,000 by the end of December to fund a well in Rwanda.

The club recently reached the $4,000 mark in its effort, and Macaluso acknowledged the help of other school groups and the Lions Club of Cooperstown for their financial support.

“We’re doing this because it is easy for us to take fresh water for granted. Many people in Rwanda, and other parts of Africa, walk miles every day to get water, and we want to help, Macaluso said in the release. “We’ve raised close to $4,000 in just ten weeks, and with four more left, I am confident we will reach our goal.”

“This is a particularly ambitious project for a school service club to complete in under four months, but this group is determined and Aidan is extremely responsible and dedicated,” Lion David Pearlman, adviser to the club, said in the release.

This year the Leos added a “President’s Project” to the list of local service efforts and have raised funds in a variety of ways, including selling light blue bracelets inscribed with the logo “Charity Water,” the international well sponsorship organization, and the words “Well Power,” the slogan of the club’s initiative.

“We have until the end of the month to finish raising money, so we hope people will consider a donation,” Macaluso said.

Anyone can make a donation by going to http://mycharitywater.org/p/campaign?campaign_id=29599, or by writing a check to Cooperstown Leo Club, and mailing it in care of David Pearlman, 15 Leatherstocking St., Cooperstown. All donations to the club up to the deadline are going to Charity Water.
