Police: Man drowned in Goodyear Lake

A local man apparently drowned after a canoe capsized during a storm on Goodyear Lake on Monday, according to Otsego County deputies.

Deputies identified the deceased as Grant N. Housworth, 56, of 237 Lake Shore Drive South, Maryland, town of Milford.

According to a media release, at about 2:45 p.m. Monday, Otsego County 911 Center received and emergency call reporting that subjects were in distress and needed assistance on Goodyear Lake.

Units from the Milford Fire Department were dispatched to the scene, and upon fire department’s arrival there were two victims in the water — one made it to shore and the other was partially submerged in the water and had to be rescued by emergency crews.

The victim was removed from the water unconscious, and cardiopulmonary and life-saving efforts were performed. The victim was taken to A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta. The victim was transferred to Albany Medical Center by helicopter in critical condition, the release said.

Housworth never recovered and died Tuesday afternoon with his family by his side at the Albany Medical Center, the release said.

The Otsego County Sheriffs Office Investigative Division and Marine Division investigated the incident, with the following report: Housworth was in a 17-foot aluminum canoe on the lake with an acquaintance when the weather changed suddenly with a thunderstorm. The winds picked up dramatically and the water became very turbulent causing the canoe they were in to overturn ejecting both occupants into the water.

The second occupant was able to grab hold of the canoe while Housworth was swept away by the current and was seen going under the water. The second occupant was able to swim back to shore.

Neither occupant was wearing a life jacket and none were in the canoe. There were witnesses to the incident who called 911.

At this time, pending the Albany County coroner’s report, Housworth’s death appears to be an accidental drowning, the release said.
