Brewery Ommegang will be kicking off a monthly series of free concerts this Friday.
According Sean Hamilton, an events coordinator with Brewery Ommegang, the Farmhouse Fridays series of concerts was created in order to engage with the local community, as well as highlight local and regional bands.
“We all personally feel that nothing goes better with a great beer than a great band,” said Hamilton.
He said that even though the brewery already hosts a series of concerts, the Brewery Ommegang Summer Concert Series, Farmhouse Fridays were envisioned as something different from the shows in the Summer Concert Series, which feature nationally recognized bands and require paid admission.
“We wanted to add a secondary set of concerts, where we could invite some of the more local and regional bands that we’ve worked with and love,” said Hamilton.
The band that will be playing at the May 16 concert will be Bella’s Bartok, a six to seven-piece folk/punk band from Northampton Mass. with a strong following in the western Massachusetts area. According to Hamilton, Brewery Ommegang became aware of the band after employees saw them perform at beer festivals and other events that the brewery was participating in.
“For lack of a better term we fell for them,” said Hamilton. “We wanted something … that you normally don’t see around this area.”
Another reason he said that Bella’s Bartok was selected was that they would appeal to local college students, who will be finished with their finals when the concert takes place.
“We wanted something that the college students could really grab a hold of and enjoy,” said Hamilton, who said that this first concert is being billed as an end-of-semester party.
Asher Putnam, who sings and plays bass in and manages Bella’s Bartok, said that the band is excited to play at Brewery Ommegang.
