Four Cooperstown Central School juniors, Aaron Idelson, Joe Harmon, Lucas Lyons and Sarah Morosko, have been selected to be student directors for the Catskill Area School Study Council’s Leadership Workshops for the 2013-14 school year.
The workshops are held at The State University Collage at Oneonta under the direction of Executive Coordinator, Jo Boring. A total of 11 student directors were chosen from area schools.
CCS has had student directors representing the district in the past, but no more than one chosen in a given year, according to Karen Lyons, licensed teacher assistant at the district who served as a chaperon for the event. She said there were 20 nominees chosen at the workshop in March, and each nominee prepared a three-minute or less speech or presentation to share with the entire group of junior leaders from area schools. After the presentation, all participants at the workshop had a chance to vote for 10 of their favorites, those they felt would be effective leaders and be able to organize and facilitate the leadership workshops next year.
Idelson highlighted his experience and leadership skills through a video presentation; Harmon played the guitar and sang a popular song with the lyrics changed to depict what he felt a leader should be and how he might fill that position; Lyons created an audio of himself set to music, speaking about how he exhibits leadership through dance and other activities, while performing a dance routine; Morosko used her writing and oratory skills to speak to the group about the general attributes of a leader and how she sees herself in possession of these in her “backpack.”
