Workshops planned this fall

Have you enjoyed watching the blacksmith work and wondered what it would feel like to strike hot iron yourself? The Farmers’ Museum will be offering hands-on workshops that will provide opportunities to learn novel skills. 

A Morning at Lippitt Farmstead will be offered from 8:15 to 10:39 a.m. Nov. 3. Participants will experience a morning behind the scenes at the historic farmstead: collect eggs, put the sheep out to pasture, and meet other animals. Once chores are finished, participants will move to the Lippitt Farmhouse to prepare and then eat a hearty breakfast of traditional foods such as sausage, eggs,Indian cake, toast, and boiled coffee.

A Blacksmithing Intensive for Intermediate-advanced levels will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 5 to 8. This class will allow two students to immerse themselves in learning traditional core blacksmithing skills. It is responsive to what the students need to learn, and will cover the core skills of our intermediate classes, tool making, and also introduce forge welding. The four-day format allows skills to be learned, practiced, and perfected by repetition.

Fragrant Waters will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 10. Participants will learn about fragrant waters and their historic uses. They will make a bottle of lavender water and a bottle of rose water to take home, and learn about how the museum staff makes hot sauce, vanilla extract, and other tinctures in Dr. Thrall’s Pharmacy.
