---- — The Cooperstown/Otsego County Relay For Life Warm Up is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Warm up is the official kick off for the 15th anniversary of the Otsego County event that takes place on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18 at Cooperstown Dreams Park.

Interested persons are invited to attend Warm Up to learn more about forming a team and becoming involved in this life-changing event. Refreshments will be served from 5:30-6 p.m. with the program immediately following.

Relay For Life is an overnight celebration whereby team members take turns walking around a track “relay” style. The event also includes an opening ceremony, a ceremonial first lap by cancer survivors followed by a caregivers’ lap, haircutting to ultimately provide free wigs for women who have lost their hair because of cancer treatments, and more. The closing ceremony is held early Saturday morning.

A wide variety of team fundraisers are held in the months preceding the May event. According to event organizers, the 2013 Cooperstown/Otsego County event goal is to generate $115,000 for the American Cancer Society to devote to research, education and services for cancer patients.

Started in 1985, Relay For Life began with a doctor who walked a track for 24 hours raising $27,000 for his local Cancer Society in Tacoma, Washington. This year, Relay For Life will take place in more than 6,000 communities and raise more than $300 million. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope that one day cancer will be eliminated, according to a media release.
