Emergency Manor head chosen

COOPERSTOWN — With Otsego Manor’s new administrator set to take a two-month leave of absence because of a medical situation involving a family member, county officials have lined up new leadership to run the nursing home in his absence.

At an emergency meeting of the Manor Committee last week, the county representatives on the panel voted to hire Kurt Apthorpe, the former administrator of the closed Countryside Care Center in Delhi, for $100 an hour, for 15 hours a week, while his services are needed.

Apthorpe and the nursing home’s director of nursing, Maureen Imperato, would oversee the Manor in the absence of Larry Di Cesare, who began working at the Manor last month, following the resignation of veteran administrator Edmond Marchi. The latter is now running the nursing home owned by Schenectady County.

To compensate her for her additional responsibilities, the Manor Committee members approved a $1,500 monthly stipend for Imperato. The added pay would stop upon Di Cesare’s return to work.

The director of nursing slot will be filled during the same period by Tina Vanderwerker. The panel approved a monthly stipend of $1,000 for her.

It is possible that Di Cesare could return to the Manor before the two month leave expires, said Rep. Katherine Stuligross, D-Oneonta, the chairwoman of the manor committee.

Because of state regulations, the county needs to have a licensed administrator at the nursing home for a certain amount of hours or the facility faces possible closure by the state, officials said.

“We wanted to make sure we are doing everything we have to do so that the Manor runs smoothly in Larry’s absence,” Stuligross said. She said she expects there will be no impact on patient care as a result of the management shuffle.

Marchi’s departure from the Manor came several months after the county board decided to sell the deficit-ridden Manor and create a local development corporation to market the facility to potential buyers.
