Popular contests return to 2013 Winter Carnival

Staff Report
Cooperstown Crier

---- — This February, the 47th annual Cooperstown Winter Carnival will offer fun for the whole family, and some tasty food and beverages sure to warm up the winter.

Anyone familiar with Winter Carnival knows the role food plays in the annual festival, held this year Feb. 8 through 10. From pancake breakfasts at the Vets’ Club, to Soup r’ Chili luncheons at the First Baptist Church, the tastes and treats are designed to appeal to a variety of appetites, according to a media release from the Winter Carnival committee.

The Carnival’s annual food contests return also this year, and the Winter Carnival Committee encourages local restaurants and the general public to participate.

Head down to the Vets’ Club on Saturday afternoon and sample and vote for the best wings in Cooperstown at the “Sergeant Pepper’s” Chicken Wing Contest from 2 to 4 p.m.. The contest is open to restaurants and there is a minimal fee for tasting. Call Teresa Mae Leveille at 544-4012 for more information or to register.

The “Sticky Fingers” Dessert Lovers Festival will kick off at 4 p.m. Saturday in the heated Farmers’ Market building in Pioneer Alley. All are invited to sample a variety of dessert goodies. Email the Winter Carnival Committee at cooperstownwintercarnival@gmail.com for more information and details on entering your own homemade treats, or visit www.cooperstowncarnival.org for entry forms. All entries must include at least 100 samples.

Categories include individual adult, individual youth, restaurant, and audience choice. Cash prizes will be awarded for first place in each category. There is a minimal fee for tasting.

And don’t forget the “Beefeaters” Chili Contest and Carnival Closer, held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Cooperstown Back Alley Grill. Vote for your favorite restaurant and individual chili entries. There is a minimal fee to sample. Email the committee at cooperstownwintercarnival@gmail.com or visit www.cooperstowncarnival.org for more information.

Not all Carnival contests involve eating, of course. The coronation of this year’s Winter Carnival King and Queen will take place just before fireworks kick off the weekend at Lake Front Park at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8. To nominate someone for this honor, download the nomination form at www.cooperstowncarnival.org. Nominations are due by Friday, Jan. 25. Nominees must be two high school students who display an exemplary attitude and outstanding character toward others in our community.

Children 12 and under can participate in the Winter Carnival Coloring Contest. Prizes will be awarded at the Carnival Closer for the top three entries in each age group. One entry per person will be accepted. Enter by dropping off the colored logo at the Carnival Kiosk during the Carnival or mail entries to P.O. Box 912. All entries must be received by noon Sunday, Feb. 10.

According to the committee, these contests are only the beginning of all the Carnival’s delectable delights. A complete listing of events will be available at www.cooperstowncarnival.org in early January.

The 2013 committee members include Co-Chairs Teresa Mae Leveille and Sarah Lewandowski, Doug Gable, Mike DeSimone, Stephen Light, Lora Newell, John Saphier, Emily Voss, Ed Warner and Brian Wrubleski.

The carnival is sponsored by the Lions Club of Cooperstown.
