Cancer fundraiser is at $103,000 mark

The Cooperstown/Otsego County Relay For Life was held last month, but the money is still flowing in.

The annual fundraiser, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, had 470 participants and has reached the $103,000 mark, according to organizers. There could be more money to come because the deadline for turning in funds is not until August 1.

Last year’s event raised a record-breaking $112,000.

Co-Chairwomen for the event, Carla Eckler and Teri Sammis worked with the event planning committee and team captains to organize the event and the fundraising efforts.

Eckler said, “I would like to congratulate the participants on their amazing fundraising efforts, and to sincerely thank the residents, businesses and organizations that supported our efforts in countless ways. It is truly gratifying to be able to assist the American Cancer Society in eliminating cancer as a major health problem through research, education, advocacy, and service.”

In her first year with Relay For Life, Sammis said, “I had no idea how big this event was! It includes Bark For Life, Paint the Town Purple and the actual Relay For Life. So many lives are touched by cancer; it’s heartwarming to think how many people wanted to get involved.”

This marked the 15th year of the event, which celebrated “The Road of Progress.” The relay is held at the Cooperstown Dreams Park. The Planning Committee will begin meeting in September for the 2014 event. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer on the committee or to assist in other ways, contact Helen Gregory, American Cancer Society community executive, at 1 (800) 227-2345 or locally at 563-9634.
