Milford EMS gets boost from brewery

The Milford Emergency Squad will soon be better-equipped to serve the community thanks to a hand from Brewery Ommegang, two people familiar with the situation said Tuesday.

The squad will be receiving a RAD 57 — a piece of equipment used to monitor such things as carbon monoxide and oxygen levels in the blood, squad captain Damon West said. The presentation will take place Saturday at the Ommegang event “Waffles and Puppets.”

“It will make life easier, serving our community and others,” West said. The squad started to provide service at Ommegang events in 2011. “They’ve been great to work with.”

Ommegang events coordinator John Tuchowski said the squad has been providing four to six members for concerts as needed. Thankfully, their services haven’t been needed, but “being safe is the most important thing,” he said.

“We make periodic donations,” he said, but when they found the squad had to borrow the equipment for its events, the company decided it would be best for the community to have the equipment available. It’s an important tool for Milford and the surrounding communities, he said.

Waffles and Puppets used to be Ommegang’s birthday celebration, but working with the Cooperstown Rotary Club, “we made it a celebration for our area.”
