Redskins bounce back on the road

STAFF REPORT

The Cooperstown boys basketball team bounced back from a crushing home loss last week with two big road wins.

Sophomore Jeff Flynn was instrumental in both victories, scoring a team-high 22 points in an 81-71 win at Canastota last Friday and netting the game-winner with five seconds remaining in a 55-54 win at Sauquoit on Tuesday.

With the pair of wins, Cooperstown improved to 9-7 on the season with two home games remaining; Thursday against Sherbrune- Earlville and next Wednesday against Herkimer.

``We’ve qualified for sectionals, now we’d like to finish strong and get some momentum for the postseason,’’ said CCS head coach Dave Bertram.

Flynn had 14 points on Tuesday to again lead the Redskins in scoring, while Jeremiah Ford had 13 and Mike Moakler 12. All three are sophomores.

Cooperstown had a nine-point lead with two and half minutes left but squandered the lead, a a team trait that Bertram said has been a season-long problem.

``We had a 20-point lead against Canastota but let them back in it too,’’ he said. ``We need to learn how to finish games when we have a lead.

We’ve lost a bunch of close games this year and in almost all of them we had a fourth quarter lead.’
