Milford softball wins again

The Milford softball team had three wins all of last year.

After two games, they’ve nearly reached that total this season.

The Wildcats beat South Kortright, 22-10, on Tuesday to win their second straight game to open the season under second-year head coach Jim Weir.

``I think we’ll be a much better hitting club this year,’’ said Weir, in his second year with the softball team after many years coaching the baseball team at Milford. ``We were very young last year, and now we all have that season under our belts.’’ Gabby Skillen worked on her pitching during the offseason and should be improved on the mound, Weir added. In a 22-10 victory over Roxbury Monday, Skillen walked eight and struck out eight.

``She really only had two innings that gave her trouble,’’ Weir said. ``But it was the first game and she’ll only get better.’’

Against Roxbury, Milford trailed 10-9 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning, scored four times in the fifth, and nine more times in the sixth to pull away. Kayla Thorn had three hits and two runs batted in for Milford, which was the recipient of 24 bases on balls.

Weir said in addition to Thorn, two-time Tri-Valley All Star Kerry O’Hara, Chynna Pitlock and four-year player Rachel Schultes should add some pop to the line-up.

``Those three all have the potential to hit the long ball,’’ he said.

Pitlock had three hits and four runs batted in during the win over SK, and she and O’Hara hit back-to-back doubles. Schultes and Kayla Thorn had two hits each.

Other returnees include leadoff hitter Emily Brigham and sophomore Mariah Coville, who had three runs batted in on Monday.

``Our first goal is to improve on last year, and if everything falls right maybe we can compete for our side,’’ Weir said. ``Schenevus is the team to beat on our side, and Edmeston will be good again in the West. In softball, you need to make your own breaks sometimes, and that’s what we’re going to try and do.’’

CV-S baseball 2-0 Strong pitching and hitting lifted the CV-S baseball team to non-league wins over Jefferson and Gilboa Monday and Tuesday.

Adam Halay had eight strikeouts in four innings and had two doubles during a 11-3 win at Jefferson Monday. Mike Fassett, Nate Herringshaw and Adams all added two hits.

On Tuesday at Gilboa, Adams did not allow a hit during his four innings on the mound, and freshman Sam Dubben had three hits and six runs batted in.

CV-S, which begins its Tri-Valley schedule at Morris today, scored 10 first inning runs.
