Rachel Robinson to speak at Hall

Tickets for May 3 event on sale

Rachel Robinson, the widow of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson, will be featured in a special installment of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s “Voices of the Game Series,” on Saturday, May 3 at 3 p.m. in Cooperstown. Mrs. Robinson will discuss her career and efforts to preserve the legacy of Jackie Robinson in a one hour discussion and question-and answer session.

The event is open exclusively to Museum members. Tickets may be purchased for $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under, and are available now by calling 547-0397. This special installment of “Voices of the Game” is presented by the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown and by XM Satellite Radio.

A civil rights activist, professor, nurse, wife and mother, Mrs. Robinson is a woman of enormous accomplishments. During the program, Mrs. Robinson will discuss her work and the efforts achieved jointly with her late husband through education. In 1973, one year after Jackie’s death, Mrs. Robinson created the Jackie Robinson Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide college scholarships and leadership training.

``We are extremely honored to have Rachel Robinson in Cooperstown for this very special event,’’ said Jeff Idelson, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Mrs. Robinson’s commitment to education and to preserving the legacy of one of baseball’s most courageous heroes has been nothing short of heroic. As her public appearances for open discussion are rare, our Museum members have the chance to be a part of an historic day.’’

The Jackie Robinson Foundation provides four-year college scholarships to minority students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership capacity and financial need.

More than 1,100 Foundation alumni are both leaders in their professional fields and consummate ambassadors of Jackie’s legacy of community service.

Visitors for this special event are invited to arrive to the Museum early on Saturday, May 3, as additional programming for the day will be announced soon.
