Edmeston baseball tops Cooperstown

Edmeston’s Matt Laymon did it all in a win over Cooperstown Tuesday at Doubleday Field.

The left-hander pitched a complete game, hit a three-run homer and also tripled in a 7-5 win over the defending Section Three Class C champion.

The win was Laymon’s sixth of the season without a loss for Edmeston, which is 7-2 overall.

With the win, Cooperstown fell to 4-3 overall heading to a pair of key Center State Conference games this week.

The Redskins played at Mt. Markham on Wednesday, and host Sherburne-Earlville on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Doubleday Field. ``They are both undefeated in the league and so are we and they are the two teams to beat on our side,’’ Miosek said. Miosek added that Philip Pohl would likely get the start on the mound on Friday. Pohl pitched for the first time last Friday, hurling a complete game three-hitter and striking out 15 in a 7-0 home win over Waterville. Pohl also helped his own cause with a two-run home run. Last Wednesday, Jim Fort picked up his third pitching win of the year in a 6-2 win over Sauquoit. Fort went the first four innings, and sophomore Kyle Liner the final three innings.

``We had good pitching and timely hitting in that game,’’ Miosek said.

The Redskins lost a 4-3, 12-inning heartbreaker on Saturday in Frankfort. Cooperstown led 2-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, but F-S scratched across a run with two outs to tie the game at 2-2 and send the game to extra innings.

Neither team scored until Cooperstown pushed across a run in the top of the 12th inning when Mac Curran singled home a run with his third hit of the day, but Frankfort again responded in dramatic fashion, getting a bloop single to right field with the bases loaded and two outs and two strikes on the batter.

``It was just a well-placed ball that we couldn’t get to,’’ Miosek said. ``That’s baseball; there wasn’t much we could do about it.’’ Tri-captain Tyler Combs had four hits, and Pohl doubled. The Cooperstown softball team beat defending Tri-Valley champion Edmeston at home Tuesday, 7- 1, behind the three hit pitching of freshman Anna Sams. Sams struck out 13 and walked four in a complete game performance.

Molly Pearlman led the offensive attack with three hits, while Bliss said Liz Kennison made a sliding catch in rightfield despite a collision with second baseman Cailin Huggins.

Tuesday’s win snapped a twogame losing streak for CCS, 4-4 overall. After defeating Sauquoit 7- 3 last Wednesday, the Lady Redskins lost to Waterville on Thursday, 12-5, and at Frankfort on Saturday, 11-8.
