CCS softball, baseball All Stars announced

The Cooperstown softball team had three first team and three second team members on the Center State Conference All Star team which was announced recently.

All six players are underclassmen. First team members are pitcher Anna Sams, a sophomore, and juniors Sawyer Graham and Stephanie Hascup.

Sams was 12-7 with 182 strikeouts in 127 innings pitched. She had a 2.26 earned run.

Graham, a first baseman, led the team with a .364 batting average and a single season program record 24 runs batted in.

Hascup, a third baseman, was second on the team in batting average (.318); RBIs (17) and runs (16). Second team members are juniors Miranda Menhinick and Cailin Huggins and sophomore Samantha Borgstrom. Leadoff hitter Menhinick scored a program record 20 runs this season, Borgrstrom threw out 13 would be base stealers behind the plate and Higgins was an excellent defensive second baseman and team leader, according to head coach Dave Bliss.

The team finished with a 13-7 record, the most wins in program history, and lost in the Section Three Class C-1 semifinals. ``We have a chance to be very competitive both in our section and in the state next year,’’ said Bliss.

The Cooperstown baseball team had three Center State Conference All Stars, including seniors Mack Curran and Nick Davoulas, and junior Kyle Liner.

Liner had 32 hits in 58 at bats, including six doubles, one triple, one home run and 23 runs batted in. Curran had 24 hits in 56 at bats, including five doubles, and also had a 4-2 record on the mound.

Davoulas, who transferred to Cooperstown from Edmeston this year, had 26 hits in 68 at bats, including six doubles and a teamleading five triples. He also had a 2-2 pitching record. The Redskins finished the season with a 12-6 record, including 5-5 in league play, and lost in the first round of sectionals.

In addition, head coach Frank Miosek was awarded the Good Sport Award at the annual Cooperstown Athletic banquet on June 11.

The award is named after longtime Sports Booster Club member Ken Kiser, who died suddenly a couple of years ago.

``Ken was like a brother to me, and this is the best award I have ever received,’’ said Miosek.
