Patriots off to another fast start

By ERIC AHLQVIST

The Cherry Valley-Springfield boys soccer team improved to 3-0 with a 2-1 Tri-Valley victory at Worcester Tuesday.

``The game wasn’t as close as the score might indicate,’’ said CVS head coach Terri Adams. ``We had numerous chances to score and controlled the ball on our end most of the game. Hopefully, we’ll start converting those chances.’’ The Patriots took a 1-0 lead on a first half goal from Jake Hoag, and Brian Panzeri headed home a cross from Elliott See midway through the second half before Worcester scored its lone goal with less than 10 minutes remaining. See assisted both goals, and CV-S outshot Worcester 18-3.

The Patriots won the Edmeston Tournament last weekend for the second straight year last weekend, defeating Morris 3-0 in the final after a physical, 1-0, victory over Davenport in the first round Friday. Tournament Most Valuable Player Chip Taylor scored a second half goal for the Patriots in the championship game after David Adams scored the only goal of the first half.

``Chip was very strong in transition, and really any of those boys on the all-tournament team could have been the MVP,’’ Adams added. David Adams and defender Jake Hanlon also were named All Stars.

Against Davenport, senior forward Mike Cagganello scored CVS’s lone goal after Taylor’s close shot rebounded off the Wildcats’ goalie, right to Cagganello in front of the net with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game.

CV-S head coach Terri Adams credited her defense with keeping Davenport out of the scoring column Friday, and said she saw offensive improvement in Saturday’s contest.

The Patriots host Morris today (Thursday) in a Tri-Valley contest and travel to Schenevus Monday. Both the boys and girls will host a tournament Sept. 12 and 13.
