CV-S boys move to 9-1 with victory over rival

LAURENS — Monday’s rematch of last year’s Tri-Valley boys Championship and Section Four Class D title game ended much the same way as the first two — with a Cherry Valley- Springfield victory.

The Patriots made a second half goal by Chip Taylor stand up in a 1-0 victory over Laurens Monday, the first league loss for the Leopards on the season. CV-S wasted several good scoring opportunities before Taylor was able to score with 14 minutes remaining in the second half.

CV-S’s Mike Cagganello hit a low shot which Laurens goalie Aaron Laing dove and tipped away, but Taylor gathered in the carom and hit a hooking shot which bounced off the right post and into the goal.

``Usually when you don’t take advantage of your scoring opportunities it comes back to haunt you, but we were able to hang on,’’ said CV-S head coach Terri Adams. ``I was impressed with the play of both teams, this game was played at a very high level of skill and intensity.’’

Taylor missed on a one-andone opportunity with Laing moments after scoring his first goal, and took a perfect feed from teammate Seth Drugatz and hit the right post with a low shot a minute later.

With the win, CV-S improved to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in Tri-Valley play. They hold a two game lead in the T-V East over Schenevus. Laurens is 6-2 overall and 4-1 in league play and hold a one game lead over Morris in the West. The teams meet at 3 p.m. Saturday in Laurens in the Leopards’ Homecoming Game.

``Every year is different and we’re learning how to play together and our theme is just to try and keep improving,’’ Adams said. ``We didn’t look at this as a rematch game from last year, just another game to try and play our game and keep trying to get better.’’

CV-S hosted G-MU Wednesday and have another rematch from year on Saturday when they travel to Poland. Poland defeated CV-S in overtime in a state quarterfinal last November.

``That will be a great nonleague test for us,’’ Adams said. ``It should be interesting.’’
