Cooperstown eighth-grader Samantha Fanion finished second in Saturday’s Center State Conference Championships at Oriskany’s 3.1-mile course.
Fanion finished in 21 minutes, 54 seconds — 40 seconds behind winner Darien Rhone of Adirondack.
Cooperstown coach Jessie Ravage said Fanion was running fifth after completing a steep incline for the second time about midway through the race. But she rallied to pass three runners over the final mile, including Adirondack’s Meghann Tanner in the final 300 yards.
The Redskins finished sixth out of 14 teams with 115 points. Sauquoit Valley won with 73 — eight better than Adirondack.
Cooperstown had three CSC all-stars — Fanion, Kate O’Handley and Jaime Zoltick. O’Handley finished 27th in 24:16 — two seconds in front of Zoltick, who finished 27th.
Cooperstown’s boys placed fifth out of 15 teams. They had 168 points. Adirondack won with 60 — nine ahead of runner-up SV.
Jacob Lansing’s 16th-place finish paced the Redskins. He crossed in 19:16. Teammate Jake Burnham was 24th in 19:34. Both earned CSC all-star honors.
Cooperstown will run in sectionals Nov. 3 at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.
