---- — Cooperstown sophomore Sean Mebust broke two program records during the Section Three State Qualifiers at Hamilton College on Sunday.

Mebust earned the best Cooperstown finish at the overall sectional championships with a fifth in the 200-yard individual medley. He touched in 2:07.4 to break the program record for the second straight day as he won the Section Three Class C title Saturday at New Hartford with a time of 2:07.86.

Mebust also placed sixth in the 100 freestyle on Sunday, setting a school record of 49.84.

“That’s a big one,” Cooperstown coach Cheryl Rock said of Mebust dipping under 50 seconds in the event. “When you do that, it’s huge. He’s got two years left, so he may win this one year. That would be pretty cool.”

Mebust’s brother, eighth-grader Ted, contributed an eighth in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.07. Section Three Class C champion Aaron Idelson rounded out the Hawkeyes’ top individual performances at the state qualifiers, placing ninth in 1-meter diving with 366.65 points during Saturday’s diving events at Mexico.

The Hawkeyes also had a seventh Sunday in the 200 medley relay as Ted Mebust, Tae Livermore, Ivan Baez-Braunstein and Sean Mebust finished in 1:48.73. The Mebusts and Baez-Braunstein also joined Michael Kern for a ninth in the 400 free relay (3:36.91).

Cooperstown was 10th out of 20 teams with 89 points. Liverpool won the team title with 349 points.

In addition to Sean Mebust’s 200 IM title Saturday at New Hartford, Ted Mebust won the Class C sectional crown in the 100 backstroke (59.36). The brothers also joined Livermore and Baez-Braunstein for a sectional class title in the 200 medley relay (1:49.44).

Cooperstown placed fourth out of 11 Section Three Class C teams, with 287 points. Lowville Academy earned the team championship with 343.5 points.

“We had a good meet and we had a good year,” said Rock, whose team closed its season Sunday. “My goal for next year is to really get them strong through the year and really get more of them in sectionals.”

State Qualifiers

Three Cooperstown wrestlers lost first-round matches Saturday during the Section Three Championships at Onondaga Community College.

Jacob Russell’s season ended at 10-10 with a 12-2 loss by major decision to Herkimer’s T.J. Philpotts at 106 pounds. Paul LoRusso (22-12) was pinned by Phoenix’s Seth Gilbert in the second period of their 120-pound opener, and Tyler Koffer (8-18) suffered a first-period pin against Camden’s Garrett Mitchell at 138. Mitchell advanced to the title match but fell, 6-0, to Laken Cook of Central Valley Academy.

South Jefferson won the team title with 132.5 points, finishing nine ahead of runner-up Mexico in the 38-team state qualifiers.
