Wildcats girls eliminated by Dragons

SCHENEVUS — On a night when there seemed to be a lid on the basket and turnovers on every other possession, Schenevus’ girls earned a 44-40 basketball victory Saturday over Milford to advance to the Section Four Class D semifinals.

“We had some ungodly turnovers,” Schenevus coach Tim Walke said of his fourth-seeded team’s 19 turnovers. “We struggled all night and we only shot 5-for-15 from the free throw line. We were fortunate to pull it out.”

On the other end, fifth-seeded Milford finished with 14 turnovers and shot 13-for-24 from the free throw line.

Despite the sloppy play, the Dragons had control most of the night before withstanding a fourth-quarter surge by the Wildcats.

Schenevus took a 31-21 lead into the final quarter.

But freshman Serena Chase spearheaded an 11-3 Milford run by making back-to-back baskets off of steals in the fourth quarter.

Also in the final quarter, Milford sophomore Addy Lawson helped lead the comeback.

After forcing a steal less than one minute into the fourth quarter and going coast to coast for a layup, Lawson scored off a Zenir miss, and made a foul shot to bring Milford to five points with 6:18 left.

“She was a trouper,” Weir said of Lawson, who suffered a right foot injury in Milford’s loss to Franklin in the Tri-Valley League championship last Saturday. “She was only at about 70 percent tonight and she did not quit at all.”

Lawson finished the night with a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.

After being held to four points in the first three quarters, Milford’s Maddy Zenir found her shot in the fourth quarter. Zenir hit a pair of free throws with 3:33 left and then made a driving layup with 2:36 to go to tie the score at 37.

“Any time you coach against Jim, you know you’re in trouble. I hope I’m as good as him someday,” Walke said of Milford coach Jim Weir. “You have to bring your game against Milford. They are a class act.”
