Can CV-S girls beat January grind?

(Continued)

The Patriots have already posted wins over their nearest rivals, beating the Wildcats Dec. 3 in Cherry Valley and beating the Indians in the finals of the Richfield Springs Tournament Dec. 7 in a non-league game.

Dubben said he thinks his team can come through that gauntlet, but only if they play consistently.

“It depends on who shows up what night,” he said. “We certainly have the talent to win the division.”

In addition to consistency, depth could be an issue for CV-S. Junior guard Emily McDermott can come off the bench but Dubben will spend most of the season trying to get experience for freshman Kaylie Yerdon and sophomores Hannah Lamouret and Miranda Stocking.

“You have to keep putting them out there because one day they are going to be the ones who have to start,” he said. “But once you get past the starters we don’t have a lot of experience.”

The Cherry Valley-Springfield girls basketball team showed its good side and bad side Friday in a 47-22 victory over Edmeston.

“We’ll have to shoot better than we did tonight,” Patriots coach Tim Dubben said, when asked how his team could defeat league leading Schenevus.

Still CV-S (6-2, 3-1) had no problems with the Panthers, limiting them to six first-half points. Lauren Loucks scored 15 points to lead all scorers and Jordan Loucks added 13 for CV-S.

Brianna Dunham and Sydney Smith each scored five points apiece for Edmeston.
