Zane Ashford and Jordan Loucks had two goals each as Cherry Valley-Springfield beat visiting Fort Plain, 4-0, Saturday night in a non-league game.
“Our competition is Milford and Schenevus, and then Franklin and Morris in the West,” CV-S coach Amy Garretson said. “This was more like a nice Saturday night under the lights.”
The weather wasn’t so nice with a non-stop rain and strong winds, but it didn’t affect both teams equally. The Patriots scored three times with the wind at their backs in the first half. The Hilltoppers weren’t as adept, even in the second half. CV-S goalie Kylie Graham and her back-up, Jordan Zaccagnino, had no saves in the game, as the Hilltoppers had no shots on goal.
Ashford scored on two long balls. Her first, about six minutes into the game, came on a corner kick from the left that sailed long, bounced off a Fort Plain defender and went into the goal.
“She got a big boot,” Garretson said about her senior stopper. “She’s a solid player, very strong. She’s a good transitional player. She can play anywhere out on the field except goalie.”
About 20 minutes later she scored from more than 35 yards out, sending the ball over the head of Hilltopper goalie MacKenzie Stevens.
“You might as well let that one go,” Fort Plain coach Kim Lathers shouted at his keeper. “There wasn’t anything you could have done about that one.”
With time running out in the half, Loucks scored her first goal on a rebound of Hannah Lamouret’s shot. Stevens was able to knock down Lamouret’s shot, but couldn’t grip the wet ball. Loucks pushed past her to get the rebound and finished the play for a 3-0 lead.
Midway into the second half, Lamouret played a long throughball from the right sideline near midfield to Loucks near the center of the goal box. Loucks sent it back to the right corner for the final score.
