Morris boys fall to CV-S, Milford

Cooperstown Crier

---- — One thing is for sure in Tri-Valley League boys soccer: Morris has been dethroned.

The west division Mustangs, who won the crossover title with a 1-0 upset of CV-S last November, lost to both the Patriots and Milford last week.

The Patriots received goals from four players and held a 19-2 advantage in shots during a 4-1 victory at Morris on Wednesday.

“We’re just young,” Morris coach Dave Sander said of his 3-1 squad. “We’re not ready for that. We played OK. Three of their goals just came on stuff in the box that we couldn’t clear. We just got really flat in the back.

“They have great spacing,” he continued. “They’re where they’re supposed to be on the field. They have guys like Wyatt (Crowley), Ben Drugatz and Jake Spencer. When those three guys, who are very good soccer players, are left unmarked they’re going to hurt you.”

Noah Russo opened the scoring for the Patriots. He scored from close range seven minutes into play after controlling a ball that deflected around in the box.

Five minutes later, Crowley set up Spencer’s goal to make it 2-0.

Crowley then scored 5:50 before halftime off an assist from Jake Fassett.

Mike Murphy narrowed Morris’ deficit to 3-1 3 ½ minutes into the second half off an assist from Ryan Morlock.

It stayed that way until Kurt Pressly scored for the Patriots with six minutes left.

“They played possession soccer,” Sander said of CV-S. “If the ball got cleared, their sweeper, Nick Mills, did a fantastic job. He was great on the ball. He was calm on the ball and played it nicely.”

On Friday, Michael Strenck had a goal and an assist and Max Lang stopped five shots for the shutout as Milford cruised to a 3-0 victory over Morris at home.

Peyton Griffiths and Will Ward also scored for the Wildcats, who received two assists from Eli Rutledge.

“They were three pretty goals,” said Milford coach Frank Spurchise.

CV-S, which suffered its first loss of the season Monday at Davenport, hosts Franklin on Friday. Milford plays Saturday at the Wright National Soccer Campus.
