Cooperstown girls soccer coach Jennifer Pindar didn’t seem all too concerned about reaching the postseason after Thursday’s 2-1 Center State Conference loss to visiting Herkimer.
“We have to finish .500 or better either overall or in league play or against teams in our class (to qualify for sectionals), so we’re close,” said Pindar, whose team moved to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in Division II of the CSC. “The only teams we’ve lost to are Little Falls and Herkimer, who are first and second in our division, so I’m confident we’re improving.”
Ashley Fahy opened the scoring off a pass from Maddie Renshaw eight minutes into the game for Herkimer, but Liz Millea tied the score with four minutes left before halftime. Millea finished a breakaway opportunity by beating Herkimer goalie Chelsea Jory (19 saves) with a shot from the 18-yard line.
After a scoreless second half, the teams entered two mandatory overtime periods. Maddie Renshaw scored the go-ahead goal with 5:08 left in the second overtime off a pass from Caitlin Roorda, and Herkimer held on for the victory.
Katie Kleban stopped 13 shots for Cooperstown, which finished with advantages of 20-17 in shots and 6-5 in corner kicks.
