Cooperstown defeats Oneonta to win tourney

— E.J. Perez’s two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning sparked a seven-run rally as the Cooperstown Major League All Star team defeated Oneonta, 10-2, in the championship of their own tournament last Saturday afternoon at Beanie Ainslie Field. ``E.J’s home run really seemed to energize us and demoralize them,’’ said head coach Bob Hall.

Perez’s home run over the scoreboard in right field tied the game at 2. Cooperstown scored five more times in the inning and three more times in the top of the sixth.

Raymond Cabrera was the starter for Cooperstown, and yielded two first inning runs over three innings. Johnny Hage pitched shutout ball over the final three innings.

Cooperstown began the day at 10 a.m. Saturday morning against Norwich, and won 2-1 as Cabrera pitched a complete game, striking out HOW AMNY

Perez hit a two-run triple off the right-center field fence in the bottom of the first inning for Cooperstown’s only runs. Hall said left fielder Teddy Trosset made a running catch in the gap that saved a run in the top of the fifth inning.

``Raymond was dominant against Norwich,’’ Hall said.

In the second game, Oneonta defeated Norwich 8-3 in an elimination game, and Oneonta met Cooperstown at 2 p.m. in the double-elimination contest.

Behind a good pitching performance from Bennett Eggler, Oneonta forced a second game with a 14-2 victory.

``Eggler had a good change-up and curveball and we couldn’t figure him out,’’ Hall said. ``Oneonta and Norwich are both usually very competitive and have a larger pool of players to choose from. To not only compete with, but beat both their `A’ teams is a big boost of confidence for us.’’

Cooperstown, 3-1 overall, will host Richfield Springs tonight at 6 p.m. at Ainslie Field, and will play Oneonta at Doc Knapp Field on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be preceded by a celebration of Oneonta’s 1985 state champion All Star team.
