Winter weather puts damper on tournaments

Cooperstown girls coach Mike Niles said Sunday night that the Redskins will attempt to make up their consolation game against the host school in the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Tournament as his team didn’t make the trip Saturday.

Niles said Holland-Patent defeated Clinton in the championship game, which went on as scheduled, and Cooperstown’s Nicole Cring earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Cring had 13 points and 14 rebounds, but Cooperstown suffered its first setback of the season with its first-round loss in the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Tournament.

“All of us were a little off, but Nic played really well,” said Niles, whose 6-1 team held a 26-25 lead at halftime. “They mixed about three defenses (1-3-1, 3-2 and 2-3 zones) pretty well and put good pressure on the ball.”

Lucy Ford scored on a putback with 50 seconds left to give Cooperstown a 31-30 lead. Allyson Freiermuth then put Holland-Patent (4-0) ahead to stay with 34 seconds to go, capping her 15-point outing with a basket off a post move.

After Cooperstown traveled on its next possession, Riley Reinold made two free throws with 2.5 seconds left for the final margin.

The Cooperstown boys did not do much better in the first round of the Dick White Tournament.

Host Cooperstown had a cold shooting night and fell, 65-30, to Fort Plain.

“We could not buy a basket all night,” Redskins coach Dave Bertram said. “It was a combination of them playing good defense and us not making any baskets.”

Fort Plain held the area’s second leading scorer, Ethan Bliss, to a season-low nine points.

The Redskins were scheduled to play Cobleskill-Richmondville in the consolation game on Saturday, but the game was postponed because of the winter storm. The championship game between Sidney and Fort Plain was also postponed.

The Milford boys outscored Laurens 60-47 in the Pat Grasso Tournament in Laurens.
