---- — Fly Creek resident Christopher Ubner will take his baseball talents to the next level.
The City of Oneonta Recreation Department announced last week that Ubner has qualified for the New York Mets Team Championship in Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit and Run competition after winning the boys 11-12 sectional title May 18 at Damaschke Field.
The date of the Mets Team Championship, which features sectional winners from across the state, has not been announced.
Ubner reached the Damaschke Field sectional by winning the run portion of the local qualifier by .02 seconds over Derek Moore, who won the 11-12 hitting title to also qualify. Overall winner Cole Platt also qualified.
Ubner earned his sectional spot with the fastest run, going from second base to home plate in 8.35 seconds.
All three advanced to sectionals as Moore won the hitting crown with a distance of 119 feet and Platt scored an age-group-best 300 points in the pitching event en route to the overall title with 712 points. Moore placed second overall at 701 points and Ubner took third at 669.
Ubner went on to win two of the three events during sectionals for 949 points, winning the overall crown by 40 points over Dylan Jacob. Ubner improved in all three categories, winning the pitch with 300 points, earning 302 more points with a hit of 151 feet and taking first in the run at 8.03 seconds. His 949 overall points ranked among the top three sectional champions in the state for a spot in the Mets Team Championship.
Age-group winners from the Mets Team Championship at Citi Field will advance to the National Championships, which will take place before the 2014 All-Star Game on July 15 at the Minnesota Twins’ Target Field in Minneapolis.
