---- — Cooperstown senior Nicole Cring had a big week for Cooperstown softball. She tossed a no hitter on Monday and was named MVP of the Mudville Tournament on Saturday.

On Monday, Cooperstown senior Cring (5-0) threw her second no-hitter against the Bulldogs in as many seasons, guiding the visiting team to a 10-0 softball victory in the Center State Conference.

Cring struck out 13 Westmoreland batters Monday. Last season, she struck out 15 Bulldogs in an April 16 no-hitter.

“Her fastball was working well early, as was her screwball,” Cooperstown coach Dave Bliss said. “Later on, she worked in the change-up.

“She was around the plate all night,” Bliss continued, noting that Cring (5-0) walked two over her seven innings of work. “There were only a few three-ball counts.”

Cring also had an impact offensively, driving a three-run triple as part of her 2-for-5 day at the plate.

Teammates Maggie Hall and Erin Hascup also contributed two hits apiece.

Cring has three varsity no-nos. Her other one came against Waterville on May 9, 2012.

On Saturday, Cring homered and threw a four-hitter in Cooperstown’s 5-2 win over Stockbridge Valley and then struck out 13 in a six-hitter as Cooperstown beat St. Lawrence, 2-1.

“We beat two quality teams,”  Bliss said.

Both opponents were undefeated coming into the tournament.

Against perennial Section Three Class D power Stockbridge Valley, Cring homered in the second inning to give Cooperstown a 1-0 lead.

Cooperstown scored four times in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 5-0. Maggie Hall led off with a triple and scored on Lexi Duda’s single. Jen Flynn contributed an RBI single in the inning.

Cring finished 2-for-3. She also had six strikeouts and walked two.

“Our defense played very well,” Bliss said. “They made a lot of plays behind her.”

Against defending Section 10, Class C champion St. Lawrence, Cooperstown scored single runs in the first and fourth innings.

In the first inning, Hall tripled and scored on Duda’s double. In the fourth inning, Catherine Borgstrom had an RBI single.

Cooperstown (6-0, 3-0) is ranked seventh in the state in Class C.
